Microcrystalline Wax

Microcrystalline wax is a type of wax derived from petroleum, characterized by its fine crystal structure, flexibility, and high melting point. It is a byproduct of the crude oil refining process and is obtained by de-oiling petroleum wax. Unlike paraffin wax, which has a larger crystal structure, microcrystalline wax has a more amorphous and pliable texture.

Key Properties of Microcrystalline Wax

1

Crystal Structure

Fine and small crystals, making it less brittle than paraffin wax.

2

Color

Typically white or off-white, though it can range from light brown to yellow in unrefined forms.

3

Texture

Softer and more flexible compared to paraffin wax.

4

Melting Point

Higher than paraffin wax, ranging between 60°C and 90°C (140°F to 194°F).

5

Adhesive Properties

Excellent stickiness and binding ability.

6

Oil Content

Generally lower, enhancing its density and hardness.

Applications of Microcrystalline Wax:

1

Cosmetics and Personal Care

Used in lipsticks, balms, and creams for structure, texture, and moisture-locking properties.
Provides stability and a smooth finish in beauty products.

2

Industrial Uses

Acts as a binder in adhesives, rubber, and sealants.
Used in tire and rubber manufacturing to improve flexibility and prevent cracking.

3

Food Industry

Serves as a coating for fruits, vegetables, and candies to enhance shine and protect freshness.
Sometimes used in food packaging materials.

4

Pharmaceuticals

In the personal care and pharmaceutical markets they are used as natural bases in lipstick, cold creams, and ointments, where they harden, lubricate, carry pigments and medication, and protect against moisture. They are also found in dental floss. Microcrystalline waxes are chemically inert.
