Paraffin Wax in Candle Making

Paraffin wax is one of the most common and widely used waxes for candle making

due to its affordability, versatility, and ability to hold fragrance and color well. Here’s

everything you need to know about using paraffin wax for candle making.

Types of Paraffin Wax for Candle Making

Paraffin wax comes in different melt points, which determine its best use:

1. Low Melt Point (MP: 46-54°C / 115-130°F)

• Best for container candles (jar candles, tins)

• Soft texture and good scent throw

2. Medium Melt Point (MP: 54-60°C / 130-140°F)

• Ideal for votive and pillar candles

• Holds shape better than low-melt paraffin

3. High Melt Point (MP: 60-68°C / 140-155°F)

• Best for pillar candles, tapers, and hurricane candles

• Harder wax that holds its shape well

Benefits of Using Paraffin Wax for Candles

Strong Scent Throw – Holds and releases fragrance better than natural

waxes.

Smooth Finish – Creates a polished, professional look.

Easy to Work With – Melts easily and blends well with dyes and scents.

Affordable – Less expensive than natural alternatives like soy or beeswax.

Versatile – Can be used for different types of candles by adjusting the wax

blend.

Basic Candle-Making Process with Paraffin Wax

Materials Needed:• Paraffin wax (choose the right type based on candle style)

• Wick (cotton or wood, appropriate for candle size)

• Fragrance oil (optional, 6-10% recommended)

• Candle dye (optional)

• Double boiler or melting pot

• Thermometer

• Container, mold, or pillar form

• Wick holder or glue dots

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Wick & Container:

• Attach the wick to the center of your container or mold using glue or a wick

holder.

2. Melt the Paraffin Wax:

• Use a double boiler to slowly melt the wax.

• Heat until it reaches 80-85°C (176-185°F) for best results.

3. Add Fragrance & Color:

• Remove wax from heat and let it cool to 65-70°C (149-158°F) before adding

fragrance oil.

• Stir in dye if using.

4. Pour the Wax:

• Pour into the container or mold at around 60-70°C (140-158°F) to prevent

cracking.

• Leave a little space at the top.

5. Cool & Cure:

• Allow candles to cool at room temperature.

• Trim the wick to about 6 mm (¼ inch) for best burning results.• Cure for 24-48 hours before lighting to improve scent throw.

Tips for Better Paraffin Wax Candles

• Avoid Overheating – Paraffin wax can burn if heated above 90°C (194°F).

• Test Wick Size – Different wax types need different wick sizes for proper

burning.

• Use Additives – Adding stearic acid can harden the wax and improve burn time.

• Prevent Air Bubbles – Pour wax slowly and tap the mold to remove air pockets.
