Using Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) for General Cleaning:
Degreasers and Oven Cleaners
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a powerful cleaner, especially effective in breaking
down grease, oils, and stubborn baked-on food. When making homemade
degreasers or oven cleaners, it’s important to use NaOH safely and in the right
concentrations.
1. Homemade Degreaser Using NaOH
NaOH helps break down fats and oils, making it great for cleaning greasy surfaces,
stovetops, and kitchen appliances.
Ingredients:
• 1 tablespoon NaOH (caustic soda)
• 1 liter (4 cups) of warm water
• Optional: 1 tablespoon of dish soap (for extra surfactant power)
• Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oil (for fragrance)
Procedure:
1. 2. 3. 4. Mix NaOH in water – Carefully add NaOH to warm water (not the reverse) to
avoid splashing. Stir gently until dissolved.
Add dish soap and essential oils – If using, stir in the dish soap to help
break down grease and the essential oils for fragrance.
Store the solution – Pour into a spray bottle or container for easy use.
Use – Spray directly onto greasy surfaces and let it sit for 10-15 minutes
before scrubbing or wiping.
2. Homemade Oven Cleaner Using NaOH
NaOH is effective in cutting through baked-on food and grease inside the oven.
Ingredients:
• ½ cup NaOH (caustic soda)
• 1-2 cups warm water
• 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap (optional, to add surfactant)
• 2 tablespoons baking soda (optional, for extra scrubbing power)
Procedure:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Mix NaOH and water – In a non-metallic container (such as a glass or plastic
bowl), carefully dissolve NaOH in warm water.
Add optional ingredients – Stir in the dish soap and baking soda for added
cleaning power and to help with scrubbing.
Apply to oven surfaces – Using a sponge or cloth, apply the cleaner to the
oven’s interior surfaces, avoiding heating elements.
Let sit – Allow the solution to sit for 15-30 minutes (for tough stains, you may
leave it longer, but check periodically to avoid over-drying).
Scrub and wipe away – After the cleaner has had time to loosen the grease,
scrub with a non-abrasive sponge and wipe clean with a damp cloth.
3. Tips for Safe Use of NaOH in Cleaning
• Wear gloves, goggles, and protective clothing when handling NaOH.
• Ventilate the area to avoid inhaling fumes.
• Rinse thoroughly after cleaning with NaOH to remove any residue.
• Never mix NaOH with acids like vinegar or bleach, as it can produce
dangerous fumes.
4. Disposal of NaOH Cleaning Solutions
• Dispose of diluted NaOH solution by pouring it down the drain with plenty of
water.
• Check local guidelines for hazardous waste disposal if you have large
quantities of NaOH or heavily concentrated solutions.
